Over 60s Open Results

On Tuesday the 4th July, we held our “Crossens BC Over 60’s Singles”. Twenty seven competitors, both male and female entered the competition. Although the weather was somewhat damp and miserable, good bowling accompanied by warm brews and great homemade cakes gave for a pleasant days bowling.

The early rounds gave some shock results, with good local bowlers falling by the wayside. These included four Southport Ladies Inter-Town players, two Lancashire Ladies County players and three Southport Federation players. Twelve of our own club players went out in the early rounds. That is how tough the competition was.

The last eight in the competition were :-

Cynthia Martin (S/port Cubs & S/port Federation) v Rita Manning (S/port Federation)

Dave Edwards (Crossens BC) v Sue Davies (S/port Cubs & Crossens BC)

Stan Kitchen (Mere Brow) v Trevor Wilkinson (S/port Federation)

Keith Cheetham (SNSC) v Mike Dunlop (Crossens BC)

Rita eased into the semi-finals with a 15-7 win over Cynthia, whilst Dave defeated Sue 15-11 to join Rita in the semi’s. Trevor came out on top against Stan 15-9 and was joined in the semi-final by Mike, after his 15-8 victory over Keith. Both semi-finals produced some excellent bowls, with Mike dominating Trevor to reach the final with a 15-6 win. This was nothing compared to the magnificent performance by Rita against Dave, I would have to say that Rita just destroyed Dave, winning 15-0.

So the final was to be Rita Manning versus Mike Dunlop. The first seven ends were brilliant, it was like watching to heavyweights taking shots at each other, with only single points being counted, 4-3 to Rita. Then at end eight and nine we saw the first two’s, one to both Rita and Mike, 6-5 to Rita. A couple of singles each, followed by another two each and we had reached end 14 with it 9-8 to Rita. By end 18 they had shared the points again and it was all square at 11-11. Then Rita’s leading and dominance got the better of Mike and Rita finished with two consecutive two’s to win the competition for the second year running 15-11. A truly great game to watch and a worthy champion yet again.

Congratulations Rita Manning, the Crossens BC Over 60’s Champion, again.

I would just like to take this opportunity to thank Brian Mills for producing a fantastic green to play on, Emma Burgess for the wonderful cakes and everybody that helped measuring and marking through the day.
